WHITBY TOWN

Harbour Whitby is on the Northeast England Heritage Coast, at the mouth of the river Esk. This flows out through the sheltered harbour separating the East and West Cliffs Whitby Abbey  The ruins of St. Hilda's Abbey stand on the East Cliff, high above the narrow streets of the Old Town. From these streets you can climb the 199 steps to St. Mary's church and it’s famous churchyard, associated with Bram Stoker's novel Dracula. If you have an interest in Dracula this can be indulged at the Dracula Experience, or by joining one of the Dracula Ghost Walks.
Captain CookOverlooking the picturesque harbour, on the West Bank is a memorial to Captain Cook the famous Whitby explorer.
The whalebone arch on the West CliffWhalebone Arch displays Whitby's past whaling importance and that of the Scoresby father and son, whaling masters.  Other famous names include Frank Meadow Sutcliffe the pioneer photographer, whose works you will see around the town, perhaps while seeking the location of a photographic masterpiece of your own.
The popularity of the Heartbeat and other television series that have featured both Whitby and the nearby North Yorkshire Moors, has encouraged visitors to wander among the same spectacular locations.
Steam TrainThe use of the North Yorkshire Moors Railway Goathland Station in the Harry Potter films has brought the same attention to nearby Goathland, and its steam railway. Steam trains from the North Yorkshire Moors Railway are now regular visitors to Whitby, having services that run from Pickering - Whitby. Details of these can be found at www.nymr.co.uk
